Financial assistance and insurance

Financial issues can be discussed with the employees of the Centrale Kas. You can contact us with questions such as ‘What will my treatment cost?’ or ‘When can I expect the invoice?’ Part of the Centrale Kas is a Foreign Business division. The staff of the Foreign Business division will assist you if, for example, you have foreign (non-Dutch) health insurance or if you are not insured.

Understanding and using healthcare in the Netherlands can be challenging, so we can provide you with some basis information about insurances, costs and invoices.

Insurances

If you have Dutch health insurance:

  • Most treatments are covered according to your policy.
  • You may need to pay an annual deductible (“eigen risico”) before your insurer covers costs.
  • Please bring your insurance card and ID to your appointment.

If you have European (non-Dutch) health insurance:

  • Ask your insurance company for a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The care facility/hospital will send the invoices directly to your insurance company. Without a valid EHIC, you will have to pay for your treatment upfront and file for reimbursement yourself, after you receive the invoice.

If you have non-European health insurance:

  • Ask your insurance company for a guarantee of payment letter, clearly indicating for which specific treatment and/or period of treatment they will cover the costs. The letter specifically has to say that HMC can send the bill to the insurance company for payment. Without a guarantee of payment letter, you will have to pay for your treatment upfront and file for reimbursement yourself.

If you are covered by the Embassy:

  • We need a guarantee of payment letter from the Embassy. The letter clearly has to indicate for which specific treatment and/or period of treatment they will cover the costs. It also has to say that HMC can send the bill to the Embassy for payment.

Healthcare costs and invoice

We understand you want to know when and how much you will need to pay. Here’s what you need to know:

  • For single services (like an X-ray or MRI requested by your general practitioner), we can give you a fixed price per service.
  • For treatment by a doctor in the hospital (called a care trajectory), we can provide you with an estimate based on the information from your doctor. This estimate may change, because the final cost depends on the exact care you need during your treatment.
  • Exact costs can only be calculated after your treatment is finished.
  • Dutch hospitals work with care trajectories. This means your entire treatment – from the first consultation to surgery and follow-up – is grouped together before billing.

This takes time, because your invoice is sent after the care trajectory is closed. The closing date depends on the type of treatment:

  • Hospital stay (clinical care): about 42 days after discharge. If you return for another procedure within this period, the timeline starts again.
  • Day care with surgery: about 42 days after your last operation.
  • Non-surgical treatment: usually 90 to 120 days after the start of treatment.

This system ensures all related care is billed together, so you won’t receive multiple invoices for one treatment.
