Referentie/interpretatie van het onderzoek Een overmaat of tekort aan jodium kan de schildklierfunctie verstoren en op zichzelf de oorzaak zijn van een afwijkende schildklierfunctie, die normaliseert als de jodiumstatus normaliseert. Jodium excretie lager dan 100 ug/L wordt beschouwd als deficient. Jodium excretie groter dan 300 ug/L wordt beschouwd als excessief en mogelijk schadelijk.
